I'm sure as is the case for many others, Carl Sagan is the reason I am so interested in science today. I was in elementary school when COSMOS aired on PBS, and it was a revelation. I hope Mr. Sagan is still learning/teaching wherever he is (Although he did not believe this was possible, I choose to believe it for him, and for all of us).

Carl Sagan has and always will be my idol and role model. From as early as I can remember Carl inspired me to learn more about the Cosmos and made me ask the question...Are we alone? Personally, I believe there are billions and billions of other lifeforms in the Cosmos. It would be very little of us to think that we are alone. Out of the inconceivable amount of stars in the sky and beyond there has to be someone out there.

I will miss Carl and his insights about the Cosmos. However, what a legacy he has left all of us to build upon. He has had an important part in many of the space exploration projects over the years and now, with the naming of the Mars Pathfinder after him - he will continue to be an inspiration to us all. And someday, we will learn if there is other life in the Cosmos - a question he always had.

But if you think about it...he already knows the answer.

Thank you Carl for your life. You made us all look at the stars in a slightly different light.

Well, it's almost been a week since the successful landing on Mars. Every day since that event, I kept coming back to the fact that Carl did not live to experience this moment, this triumph, and it saddened me greatly. I have just discovered this web-site, and read the comments and condolences of many others. I too will miss Dr. Sagan, because like so many, his COSMOS series and writings inspired me and opened my eyes to wonder and learning. It does feel strange to miss a man that I've never met, but reading these heartfelt messages has assuaged that sorrow. You have done Carl's family, and everyone who cared about him, a service by providing this forum. My sympathy to Carl's family and friends. He truly was a giant of our time.

Thank you for your Carl Sagan site. I enjoyed his books and it was a pity he left this orb so soon. I'm currently reading "Demon haunted world", and its great. I'm also seeing "Contact" this week.

I think he was one of the best philosophers I have read, and it wasn't even his main job. His perspective on things was a cool one.

The reason I write, is that I heard a cool quote from him somewhere, and I was wondering if you could tell me the original version. It concerned him being unsure whether it was more amazing that we were alone in the universe or that we were not. If you could tell me the uncorrupted version I would appreciate it.

I'v spent the last two weeks watching Cosmos again as an adult.

After a long and complete search in and about my immediate world, I found the complete collection in a store in Denver, Co. The man was an incredibly complex person with an abundance of love and flare for science. This along with a flare for passing that love to others was the main reason for my getting into science and eventually getting a job at Intel without any college degree of any kind. What a battle it must have been for him to deal with his own complexity.

If there is a life after death (which I'm sure he would vigorously debate due to the lack of "reliable and realistic evidence" as with UFO's), I shudder to contemplate his joy with the discoveries he has made in the Cosmos with his new found freedom. Thanks "a billion" for keeping this page on the Web.

Dr. Carl Sagan will be long remembered, I promise.

When I was young, when Cosmos was on the television, I sat with rapt attention, never leaving the living room, never wanting to miss one moment, never wanting to miss one word of one sentence that Mr. Sagan spoke. I felt the wonder of astronomy, the wonder that he was showing the world, showing me. That same year, my parents bought me a Sears telescope and the 1st edition (hardback) of Cosmos. The telescope didn't last long due to constant use and a friend walked off with my edition of Cosmos (I'll replace it if I can) but my love and wonder of science has never left me.

While I took to writing rather than science, I am going back to school to follow my first love - to discover the world around us through careful observation, through the scientific method he talks about in his brilliant book "Demon Haunted World".

I wish that I could have thanked Dr. Sagan personally for his efforts to bring something so wonderful, the world around me, to my television screen all those nights. I would have loved to have him standing there when my dad and I first focused on the mares of the moon. I think he would have been very proud, and very happy, to see a farm kid first look to the stars and wonder what they were made of, how far they were away, to stand beneath them and gaze up in sheer glee. The stars are no longer pinpoints in the sky but friends of mine.

Thank you, Dr. Sagan. Thank you for all that you have done for me and others like me.

I'll miss you.

Dr. sagan was a true scholar. He typified the meaning of practical applications of education. Thoughout his life he has given more and more to the body of knowledge that is science. He brought science to the non-scientist and scientist alike. Carl influenced me early in my life through his wonderful series, "Cosmos". From listening to him tell of the marvelous and surreal universe that we inhabit, to reading his important essays on the problems that we face here on Earth, Sagan has drawn me into science. Although, In my opinion, the most important contribution Sagan has given us lies not in his scientific rhetoric, but in his humanitarianism. He was a true believer in the human spirit. The idea that we as a species can do anything if we just pull together is a beautiful concept posited by Carl and it is one that we should all try to adhere to.

I was very sad to hear of Dr. Sagan's death last year. I have just found this website and I think it is marvelous that so many people have contributed to it. It shows what a profound effect this great mind had on so many people.

I remember watching 'Cosmos' when I was growing up. It was the most fascinating program I had ever seen, and still is. Dr. Sagan had the great gift of being able to make science accessible to the non-scientist in such enthralling style. He awakened in me a thirst for knowledge about our universe that has never been quenched. I have read all of his works, and those of many others, in an attempt to learn about our universe and about our place in it. But not only was Dr. Sagan such a brilliant scientific mind, he was also a great mover for peace and humanity. During the cold war years, he saw down the road in which we were all being driven and implored those in positions of influence to turn back before it was too late. I am sure his words played no small part in the growing trend of 'global village' thinking. In this time of great discovery, when so much now seems possible in stellar exploration, it is sad to think that he will not be here to guide us on our way. I wish I had had the opportunity to ask him so many questions and discuss so many things with him, like many others I am sure!! One of the greatest minds of this, or any other, century has been lost. But, boy, what a profound influence on so many lives. Quite unique. My sincerest sympathies to his family and friends.

Dear Carl, Family & Friends

My wife and I have only recently discovered your fantastic works of literature and have been able to source the series of Cosmos to our delight, only to discover that your precious life is no longer here. What we have found in your inspiring words, both inscribed and vocalised, have really invoked in us a wonder of all things scientific and philosophical. We have begun a frenzy of learning. We now have this need to know everything we can about life and it^Rs secrets. I am now obsessed with subjects previously unknown to me, like astronomy, religion and physics. I grew a Roman Catholic and my wife a Jew and, these man-made segregations nearly cost our love for each other. We then overcame such simple yet limiting beliefs and delved into believing in ourselves and our fellow man. We both can easily subscribe to your atheistic views and we do. Science is our only reliable key to self-discovery and discovery of the world (and universe) around us. We both thank you for all your inspiration and we will miss you, especially because we learned of your life^Rs work only after your life ended. But know one thing, you will never be forgotten, for during your life you glowed like a supernova my friend.

I just wanted to put into words the way that I felt about Mr. Sagan. He was a wonderful man and the most intelligent man I could come to identify with. He made me understand more of the world around me and did it in a way that was so easy for someone like me could understand. The way that he spoke to the general public was sensible and we all are just that much grateful that he would take the time out to help the little guy to understand this world that we live in. I have watched Cosmos and I have read a couple of his books. His light will be sorely missed. Has been missed for a long time now. God Bless his family and all that worked with him in his life long work. Robyn King

I miss Carl Sagan! I show an episode of "Cosmos" each week to my seventh grade class and they are enthralled. They got a big kick out of "Blues for a Red Planet", and "Travelers in Space and Time" blew their minds. As goofy as they act the other 39 hours of the school week, I have their undivided attention in Friday's science class because they want and expect to learn something that they would not ordinarily have any exposure to. One of my biggest flakes (affectionate term) even did his oral book report on Keppler because he wanted to learn more.

In all that is now and all that is here, why do some we question our belonging?. I am filled with awe at our race, they seem so naive at the beauty of creation, to destroy without a single thought. I have little words to direct my thoughts, but I mind believes in all you have said.

Subject: The Night I Met Carl Sagan

One night I had a dream in which I met Carl Sagan. Such dreams are rare for me.

It was the middle of the night, and we were walking along a rain-slick street in a large city. Carl was talking, and talking, mainly about himself and his work. I got the impression that as long as you got him talking about himself, you were his friend. Although I found him to be somewhat conceited, I still found the experience fascinating.

We came upon a 24-hour book store, and we went inside. Near the front of the store was a small display of paperback books which Carl had written. He pointed at the display and said, "See? That's just what I was talking about!"

We left the store and continued to walk, and Carl kept talking the whole time.

I never met Carl Sagan in real life, but somehow I feel that if I had, we would have been friends.

Subject: Goodbye Carl

It's now just over a year since the passing of Carl Sagan. The sense of loss is still very great, the words still inadequate to express it.

I started out devoted to science, but was turned off it and told, during my early time at university, that I would never amount to anything in science. I left science all together, intending never to return. A couple of years later, I happened across "Cosmos." It was a pivotal point in my life. Quite simply, Carl Sagan inspired in me the wonder with which I had started out to study physics. He inspired me to return to university and continue to study. If not for Carl's inspiration, I doubt that I would have the PhD in physics which I now hold. Now, whenever I think about science in general, or physics in particular, I recall Carl's voice and image -- they are forever linked in my mind and in my heart.

Carl inspired us to dare to think big; to dare to imagine a better world. He cautioned us against our natural conceit, he was a voice of reason in a cacophony of unreason. He was a poet with the gift of science, and a scientist with the gift of poetry.

The Voyager interstellar record contains a recording of the brain waves of his wife, Ann Druyan, recalling what it was like to fall in love with him. There is a beautiful bitter-sweet poignancy to this. Carl was one of our planet's very best. He was a first-class example of what humans are capable of being; he was a shining example of science and compassion, reason and caring, logic and love. He was someone whose very existence enriched us all on planet Earth -- he was a human being of whom the whole human race could be proud. I can think of no better emissary to the Cosmos than a loving memory of Carl Sagan.

Goodbye Carl.

Loved the man even though I never met him. What a loss to humanity. His intelligence will hopefully permeate throughout the known and the unknown world. Carl Sagan's brilliance and inspiration should be permanently implanted in every school and place of learning. If we could only emulate in some small way his passion for life and his tolerance, understanding, and compassion for fellow beings, beliefs, and way of life - this world would be a far better place. In my estimation, he has surpassed the accomplishments of all the scholars, scientists, and learned historians whom he so graciously exalted. May he live on forever.

Carl Sagan...just saying his name, makes me realize what an inspiration he was to me as a child. He taught me to question the unknown, explore the things I found interesting ,and find love and answers right in my own backyard ( the sciences). I'm an artist, (starving), Nothing profound, impressive or archive bound but, I draw his cosmos, his heavens, the fantasy of the unknown. He opened that door for me; That creative point where others fear to venture. My heart fills with sadness becuase I will never see him, hear him again, but his words and visions will dance with me forever.I have forever benefited from this SUPER man! ........The universe weeps and yet finds comfort as she wraps her arms around him, as he slumbers in the heavens of his home. Good bye my friend.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Sagan in person, but invited him into my home each time I tuned in to his Cosmos series on PBS. My father first introduced me to the show, and then allowed Dr. Sagan to introduce me to the stars, planets, asteroids, black holes, etc. I had not considered myself to be a bright child, but found myself in awe of Dr. Sagan as he delivered information on the different aspects of the cosmos. I wish I could say that I went on to become an important astronomer or that I had made some incredible discovery regarding to space science, but I cannot. I can say that I have retained an interest in events that concern space travel, and have enjoyed printing pictures from the Hubble, and plan on teaching my daughter about constellations and such. Dr. Sagan is missed in our home. Our cat, Sagan, does her best to carry on the spirit and the name.

I am short of memorty on his PBS series.

I had always had a lot of respect for this man and the work that he did till he made the big jump to junk science, making that doom and gloom statement telling the world that, if we attack Sadam, he will light all the oil wells and that will start something that is equal to a Nuclear winter. The smoke will cover the earth, killing everything that grows and in return, us.

Well, what really happened? We ended up with some of the most beautiful sunsets that we have ever seen in many, many years.

When stupid scientists make statements like that, for what ever reason (notoriety, tv, whatever) they make fools of themselfs. Carl has done a lot of work over the years of his life and now we are not sure how much, if not all of it is flawed and incorrect.

Sorry that he died. Sorry that anyone has to die. But he could have died wiser if he hadn't made such a ludicrous statement.

CARL SAGAN WAS A HUMAN BEING WILLING TO SACRIFICE HIMSELF FOR THE BETTERMENT OF MANKIND. HE INCURRED THE WRATH OF MANY PEOPLE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD BY PLAINLY AND SIMPLY TELLING THE TRUTH. SUNDAY NEWSPAPER MAGAZINE ARTICLES THAT SPOKE OF AMERICANS "INVADING" VIETNAM, BOOKS AND TELEVISION SERIES WHICH DEPICTED RELIGIOUS LEADERS SPREADING DISINFORMATION IN ORDER TO KEEP THEIR POWERFUL POSITIONS. PEOPLE ENSCONCED IN THE MILITARY, RELIGION, NATIONALISM, OR RACISM - PEOPLE WHO IMPEDE THE PROGRESS OF MANKIND, PEOPLE WHO WISH TO LOWER THE COLLECTIVE MINDSET FOR THEIR OWN BENEFITS WERE SHOWN FOR WHAT THEY WERE BY CARL SAGAN. MR. SAGAN USED ASTRONOMY AS AN IDIOM FOR SHOWING HUMANKIND HOW INSIGNIFICANT WE CAN, AT TIMES, BE. THIS TOOK A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF BRAVERY THAT WE FEW SCIENTISTS EXHIBIT.

He will always live in his work and we will always have just that little piece with us.

I will never forget when I learned of the news of Carl Sagen's death; I was filled with such a profound sadness. I always thought that Carl Sagan had so eloquently stated many of the ideas that I have come to value so dearly over the years. I remember watching the "Cosmos" series and then reading other books of his, such as the beautifully written "The Dragons of Eden".

Just today I finished reading another treasure from Carl's legacy: "The Demon-Haunted World: Science As A Candle In The Dark". What a wonderful tribute to the beauty of science and that simple, yet what must have been at the time of the enlightenment counter-intuitive, idea that knowledge comes from positing a hypothesis and then trying our best to shoot it down; if the hypothesis is unable to be shot down, in spite of our best efforts to do so, then our level of confidence in the veracity of that hypothesis is proportionately high. However, if we are able to shoot that hypothesis down, then no matter how emotionally attached we are to that hypothesis, we are behooved to discard it and move on in our quest for knowledge. May the candle of science always burn bright!
