I was very young, less than ten years old, in the late '70s or early '80s when I first came across the astronomer known as Carl Sagan. His TV series "Cosmos" awakened the astronomer in me and opened my mind to the real vastness and wonder of outer space. Not long after, I purchased a copy of his book of the same title and finished it in record time. A master of astronomy and storytelling made it a fascinating read. His easily comprehensible explanations of the mathematical concepts developed by such early mathematicians such as Pythagoras and Euclid, up to the theory of relativity of Albert Einstein were so engrossing, that even non-math whizzes would be able to grasp its concepts. His vivid description of the travels of the Voyager space craft and the landscape of Mars makes you feel as if you're there alongside the spacecraft. He was truly a master of his profession, as an astronomer, a scientist, an author, an educator. He is indeed a great loss to the human race....

I have been very interested in space for as long as I can remember. Carl Sagan's Cosmos, which I read at age 11 or so, was one of the first substantial books on astronomy/cosmology that I read. The book left a lasting impression on me, and raised my enthusiasm for science above what it had already been. Carl Sagan had a very likeable personality, and a way of articulating complex thougts in such a way that even non-scientists couldn't avoid being interested. He will be sorely missed.

Dr. Sagan spoke at our Fall Convocation at Northern Illinois University in 1995. It was shortly after his blood transfusion and he was not looking very good but his dedication was so strong that he went on to give a heartwarming and inspiring lecture.

I'm extremely happy that he did decide to speak as his passion and brilliance influenced many to change the way in which they viewed the world and reassess what they believed.

I have a selfish wish that I could have thanked him for bringing such a marvel of insight and clear thinking into the world. Mr. Sagan's book solidified a lot of feelings, opinions, and fears that I hold to be true. After reading the book I felt a true oneness with the man. The fact that he grew up in the same stomping grounds as my parents also contributed to positive feelings. The man was a great realist. He no doubt loved mankind but in the same instance saw it shortcomings. I consider myself fortunate to have access to his last written insights.

Dear Dr. Sagan,

While recently browsing through the Planetary Society world-wide-web page, I noticed several postings regarding your health. Late last evening, I watched in dismay the last few minutes of Nightline and I saw that the concerns were warranted. I would like to wish you a speedy recovery from your illness.

I have never had the pleasure of meeting you, but you have had a profound impact on my life and your writings have allowed me to clearly understand my position in the universe. Like so many other people around the world, I was first introduced to the depths of the universe and the origins of humanity through your books and the PBS television series "COSMOS". I can remember anxiously awaiting each new episode of COSMOS while I was in high-school. As a young adult, I read several of your books including "SThe Dragons of Eden, "The Cosmic Connection" and "Broca's Brain. A recent favorite has been "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors".

Your books helped me through a very difficult time in my youth when I questioned everything and my parents were too naive and conservative to begin to appreciate the complexity of the universe. They often thought that I was confused, or disturbed. Your writings allowed me to understand the true nature of the universe and that I was no less of a person for rejecting traditional western philosophy and religious beliefs.

I have continued on in my studies of science, management and eastern philosophy. I am currently employed as the Electrical Design Manager for a leading producer of semiconductor plasma processing equipment. I have visited the Cornell University campus on three occasions and I look forward to having the opportunity to pursue a MSEE at Cornell in the next few years.

My interest in Cornell stems directly from your association with the school and the outstanding research and technical work that is performed there.

Thank you for letting so many of us share your passion and your knowledge and for all of your efforts in bringing the vastness of the universe to the common man. Again, I wish you strength, health and a speedy recovery.

Sincerely,

Larry S. Lanpher

I saw that he was also in awe, maybe the "Holy tromos" Kazantzakis speaks of, but not fear, no. Awed and admiring. I have treasured the feeling he inspired in me, respect and reverence towards life. That I will always have from him.

I hadn't cried in over 10 years, but on that gloomy December morning, the tears came heavy. I received a phone call from a friend who also took delight in understanding the world and science, and he told me the sad news of Sagan's death.

It's now June and i just started reading his last book "Billions and Billions" and the sadness is still with me.

Carl Sagan showed me the world through eyes I could never have found myself. I feel like I've lost a parent. It's time for other scientists to step forward and bring the public closer to understanding science. Though Carl can never be replaced, it is imperative that we, the public, do not fall into the demon haunted world, but rather strive to comprehend the cosmos and who we are. An idea that Sagan worked so hard on. Our survival depends on it! Some scientist shy away from the public, but I also believe part of their job is to help explain it to us.

How can we the people make intelligent decisions on issues at the polls or anyplace else unless we truly understand the material. And many times the material being decided on is science related. With problems from global warming, deforestation, ozone depletion, and pollution we need more than ever to understand.

Thank you Dr. Sagan, hopefully you weren't are last candle.

Hello. I'm a 17 year old, graduated from high school this year, soon to be a student at Carleton College in Minnesota. That being said, Carl Sagan has changed the way I see the world and beyond. I'm not old enough to have watched the "Cosmos" series when it came out, and sadly enough I see few other people my age, at my high school (in Vermont) who know of him, few people who are interested in science for the sake of knowing. It could be that these are just high school students, that they aren't "mature" enough to have that wonder, to know the thrill of understanding. But I don't think that's the reason. The teaching here is often by the book, focusing on questions. Really, if a student can just remember formulas, why remember anything else? If "science" to a student means formulas, tedious details etc, they will not be inspired to learn on their own. But if they learn the wonder of science - the tedious details will still be tedious and require work to understand, but the inspiration to understand will overcome the complacency towards them. Apathy that is a large part of the high school experienced will be diminished significantly.

That needs to be dealt with in future generations. The wonder needs to be a part of the teaching. As far as Carl Sagan goes, his books provided the inspiration for me. He's the teacher, and I'm a student. I haven't read them all, yet, but the ones I have have been fascinating. So - I sincerely hope that Sagan's drive to popularize science (more importantly, popularize wonder) is passed on in my generation, and those in the future.

People call me a child because of my age of fourteen, but my love of space and the worlds beyond comes from the genius that was Dr. Sagan. Every star he talked about in Cosmos, I was taken there. Every planet he described, I was transported to in my imagination. His dreams made mine possible.........in the future, I hope to walk on a distant planet....all because of what Carl Sagan did.........made us believe.

I've admired this man for years...was shocked to learn of his death in the dedication of the movie Contact. I, particularly, was in awe of his ability to take on the gods and their, accompanying sheep, with his unimpeachable logic and reasoning.

He isn't really gone; he's merely taken up residency in some distant black hole in some obscure galaxy far from here. Bon voyage, Carl

To Ann,

No member of our species contributed more to our lives than did your husband. Truth. That is what he gave to us., what he helped us to understand., when we needed it the most. In my heart, Dr. Carl Sagan is a saint.

Your husband opened his conscience and intellect to us in the purest and most courageous way, revealing his heart and his hope for the earth.

His name will be at the top of the list of the great educators and liberators of our epoch. Every human who lives will be in his debt.

Let our tribute be to take his lead, accept our responsibility to courageously and truthfully seek the answers, however disquieting., so that the mistakes of the past that silenced men like Dr. Sagan, can not be repeated

When the moment of ultimate awakening happens, all of human civilization will remember who it was that made us aware of the natural necessity of it's discovery.

Thank you Ann, for devoting your life to making our lives better. Thank you for the gift of Cosmos. Please remember me in your thoughts of Dr. Sagan.

Peace,

Jim L. Roberts

As a 15 year old, despite being in advanced placement science, my outside science reading has consisted of A Brief History of Time. At the time, the author of the intorduction was simply a name, that I had heard of once before, as the man who coined the phrase "Cosmos". But after seeing, "Contact", the movie, today I've just been thinking nonstop since. Truly a thought provoking story, and a great literary adaption to film. And it has made me entertain all kinds of thoughts, and it has made me recognize what a brilliant mind Mr. Sagan must have been. And it has inspired me to go out, and read some of his other works. Both fiction and non-fiction.

Well, it's been many months now. I'm listening to Creation du Monde by Vangelis (from L' Apocolypse des Animaux) and still the inspiration I felt at 12 years old, watching "The Shores of the Cosmic Ocean" on PBS, overwhelms me. Thank you, Dr. Sagan, for making me feel forever proud to be a human being.

P.S. And thank you for responding to my letter all those years ago. I still have it framed on my wall.
