I have always felt that the description of 'god' in the book Contact must be Dr Sagan's own. That God was bigger than one tiny blue planet. Dr Sagan was more than a teacher, more than a scientist, he was a guiding light. Dr Sagan made the wonder of the universe understandable, comprehendable, and desirable. Science is how we got where we are and how we will get to where we are ment to be.

Without Dr Sagan life, and science will all be so very much tougher for the average person to understand and become excited about. His unimpeachable greatness lies in his ability as a teacher. In 1979 I had read everything Dr. Carl Sagan had written, and was pleased that he'd undertaken a science show for PBS. We didn^Rt yet know that Cosmos is not only the best science show ever do ne on television, it is the best thing ever done on television.

Carl Sagan taught us that our great and soaring and passionate intelligence's are our salvation. Our future is literally in our own hands, our toolmaking ability, in science. If he did believe in God, he certainly didn't waste our time remaking Him in o ur image. Carl Sagan felt the universe is neither hostile nor benign -- just indifferent to the concerns of those such as we. A view not much to our liking, perhaps, but at least we know where we stand. Carl Sagan did a lot of debunking, but he debunke d bunk. We are better for it, and we should be doing more debunking ourselves.

Critical thinking and healthy skepticism are now common and acceptable. Sadly, pseudo-science is still with us, but largely because of the efforts of Carl Sagan, it is no longer as pervasive or broadly credible. He has taught many of us that fundamental ism is the enemy of progress for the human condition.

But, the massive intellect and courage of Carl Sagan has fundamentally changed the way I view my life and the Cosmos. He has also changed my son's outlook, and, I like to think many of my students have benefited from what I've gotten from Carl Sagan. I further believe that my story can be retold millions of times. Our species, our prospects and our view of our place in the universe has changed for the better because of this great man. And today there is an accumulated record which is more closely related to t he intense teaching, intelligence and insight of Carl Sagan than perhaps we recognize.

Since the first showing of Cosmos we have seen profound changes world wide, changes Carl Sagan always called for. Wicked leaders have been cast out, absurd empires have collapsed, abject enemies have shaken hands, and for the first time since their incep tion, numbers of the almost unspeakable weapons of mass distruction have actually been taken apart. Because of his efforts we are now energetically looking for signals from alien civilizations, a notion that was broadly considered absurd twenty years ago .

There is still far to go, but Carl Sagan has given us hope for the long term survival of the human species, has convinced us that we are the wisest of the apes, and that one day we will inhabit the far reaches of the universe. How does one measure such g ifts? How does one adequately mourn such a great person?

Of course, we will miss him the rest of our lives. Knowing how much he is loved and revered, I expect that those millions to whom he was THE TEACHER will continue his life's work of healthy skepticism, critical thinking, intense curiosity and maintaining an optimistic view of the future. All of us owe the memory of Carl Sagan at least that.

Saddened as I am of the news, I know Carl's contribution to mankind will not disappear with his passing. The light he helped, and continues to help, fuel in so many of us is a measure of his heritage. My middle son was five when he first witnessed Cosmo s. The lessons he learned have imacted his perspective on life. Carl's light remains a strong light, in us, and it will shine for multiple generations ... perhaps centuries. If such is a measure of light, then darkness will not soon come to us, or Carl .

I think his contribution to all of us can be summed up best by paraphrasing his own words; 'In the vastness of space and the immensity of time, it is OUR joy to have shared a planet and an epoch with Carl.'
He will be missed.

In this day and age of pseudo-science and tabloid news, Prof. Sagan offered us the wonderful twin gifts of truth and reason. I will miss him greatly. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends. Professor, one way or another you live on.

Am a stringer for TIME.
And I have always loved Sagan, whom I met through his memorable COSMOS series.
CNN aired his last intereview, where Sagan says we should ponder on the fact that there millions of suns like ours in the Mily Way, and trillions of galaxies such as ours.
Do you know where I could find a transcript of this interview. Have already emailed CNN today and suppose they will come up with the transcript. Am e mailing you just in case.

God Bless for your good work.

I felt a sense of great personal loss when I heard of Dr. Sagan's death. The writer, the scientist and humanitarian. And it's because no one else's books have given me so much reading and thinking pleasure. The hour's I have spent entharalled by Dr. Sagan's superb writing are countless. And now his golden pen has been silenced forever.

REST IN PEACE Carl Sagan. The world will miss your wonderful writing and your eloquent speeches on it's behalf.

As a Sailor for twenty years in the Navy Prof. Sagan enkindled in me a curiosity about the heavens which will remain with me till the day I die. His "COSMOS" series gave me and my family an education in the wonders of the universe that we will keep with us always. As for his critics complaints about his spending a lot of his energies creating mass appeal for the wonders of the universe, all I can say is what small minds for such intelligent people. He will be remembered in my family for what he gave to us, an undying curiosity about the stars and what they may hold. He was truly a "GREAT AMERICAN' and a great man. I wish him Godspeed on his journey "to the Stars".

No-one has contributed so much to my understanding of the primary principle of anthropology: No thing can be considered without considering its relationship to all else. Can we humans ever truly comprehend the cosmos?

Dr. Sagan humbled me, and I am grateful.
